Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson Shatter Rohit-Rahul's Six-Year-Old Record in New Zealand
Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson smashed a 93-run opening stand in just 35 balls against New Zealand in Christchurch, breaking Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul's six-year-old record and matching India's T20I record for 50-plus partnerships in a year.
Abhishek and Samson added 93 runs for the first wicket in just 35 balls, laying the foundation for India's successful chase. Their explosive opening stand not only helped India maintain the required scoring rate but also established a new record for the highest opening partnership by an Indian team in a T20 match played in New Zealand.
The previous record was held by Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, who had shared an 89-run opening partnership in 2020. Abhishek and Samson went past that mark with their 93-run stand against New Zealand in 2026.
The partnership also ranks as the fifth-highest opening stand by any team against New Zealand in a T20 International played on New Zealand soil.
The highest opening partnership against New Zealand at home remains the 143-run stand between England's Alex Hales and Michael Lumb in 2013. Sri Lanka's Alex Hales and Pathum Nissanka recorded a 121-run partnership in 2023, while Australia's D'Arcy Short and David Warner also added 121 runs in 2018. Pakistan's Ahmed Shehzad and Fakhar Zaman occupy the fourth position with a 94-run partnership in 2018. Abhishek and Samson follow with their 93-run stand in 2026.
The Indian opening pair also matched another significant record in T20 Internationals. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have now registered five opening partnerships of 50 or more runs in a calendar year, equalling the Indian record.
KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma achieved the feat five times in 2021, while Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill also recorded five such partnerships in 2025. Abhishek and Samson have reached the same mark in 2026, giving them an opportunity to move ahead of the previous benchmark.
Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma recorded four opening partnerships of at least 50 runs in 2018.
India's successful chase of 226 runs in Christchurch therefore delivered more than a series-opening victory. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson rewrote India's opening partnership record in New Zealand while equalling the national mark for the most 50-plus opening stands in a single year in T20 Internationals.
